With over 1,000 planets and 120 star systems to explore, calling Starfield huge is an understatement. Yes, some of these planets are gas giants that cannot be landed on, and some are rocky satellites, but surveying and exploring each of them is a monumental task.
This shows that being sidetracked in Starfield is not as uncommon as playing Fallout or Skyrim (which eventually leads the player to Blackreach, one way or another). But how often does that happen, especially with the game's use of its New Game Plus, which encourages players to finish the main campaign as soon as they can?
Originally posted on Reddit by user u/VMetal4life, they asked if their fellow Starfield players experience the same dreadful feeling of getting sidetracked into another quest rabbit hole. Initially, they only wanted to gather resources such as titanium for an outpost they were trying to build, but eventually ended up on another Ryujin quest, which postponed their outpost for more hours than intended.
Some players share that this happens to them almost every single time, albeit with different reasons for why being sidetracked in Stafield is becoming one of their hobbies.

One shared that this always happens to them during shipbuilding; they intend to do a specific design and have a much different output than they initially wanted. Others mentioned that it usually depends on what character they are role-playing with.
For example, they are keen to get sidetracked with quests that reward credits whenever they play their space pirate character. They are much more inclined to visit and explore places of interest if they play an explorer character.
Either way, it would seem like getting sidetracked almost 100% of what Bethesda intended for most of their games. One can relate to how the Dragonborn mysteriously always ends up in Blackkreach while farming for butterflies in Skyrim.
Starfield’s Shattered Space DLC is coming soon. With the studios’ plan to release annual story expansions, players can expect more activities and hours to explore the Settled Systems.
