As you all know, Starfield is one of the biggest exclusives Xbox has managed to snag in decades. The purchase of Bethesda's parent Studio, Zenimax, sent the whole Bethesda catalog into the Xbox family of exclusives.
Over time, the sentiment from studio heads has changed regarding exclusivity, especially during the drama that unfolded during the Activision Blizzard drama. Still, when it came to Bethesda Game Studios, their franchises looked locked in as Xbox exclusives for the rest of eternity.
During the 2021 Xbox and Bethesda showcase, studio head Sarah Bond had this to say -
“It is awesome to share with you for the very first time one of the most anticipated games in the world, from Todd Howard and the team at Bethesda Game Studios – a ground breaking game, and yes – it’s exclusive.”
As reported by XboxEra, recent rumors suggest that the statement may not hold up anymore, with Xbox looking to ship some of their exclusives over to Sony's rival platform, the PS5.
Per XboxEra -
According to our sources, Microsoft senior leadership have reportedly debated the various pros and cons of releasing more of their exclusive software elsewhere, and internally, not everyone is necessarily happy with the decision, but recouping the potential money “left on the table” by not releasing elsewhere has arguably won out.
According to sources, Hi-Fi Rush’s release on rival platforms is tentatively planned for Q1 this year, and we’ve been advised to expect Microsoft to make a more public announcement on this new strategy this month.
Xbox has brought exclusives to the Nintendo Switch in the past, with Ori and the Blind Forest back in 2019, joining Mario and friends on the popular handheld.
The remaster of the Rare classic GoldenEye from the N64 was made possible thanks to a collaboration with Microsoft, which now owns Rare. However, bringing Xbox exclusives to their main rival, Sony's console, was previously unheard of outside Minecraft, which was already muli-format before Microsoft bought Mojang Studios.
We will be interested to see how this one turns out and will be ready to welcome a new audience of PlayStation players here at Starfield Portal should the rumors play out as reported.
