Bethesda's approach to Starfield’s space and planetary exploration is interesting. Most land exploration involves walking and running to several places of interest.
Space exploration mainly revolves around space fights, and interplanetary travel often uses the Fast Travel option in the game. However, some Starfield players are confused about the unit of measure for speed when traveling in space via these super-fast spaceships.
When piloting ships, a numerical indicator in the player dashboard displays “Speed,” but what exactly does “Speed” mean? Is it ironically called “Speed per second”? Bemused Starfield fans also weigh in on this question on Reddit.

Many fellow Starfield players chime in to answer, with some joking it could be “speed per second” or “Skyrim Copies You Bought Per Year,” as mentioned by one of the community members, taking a jab on how Bethesda released multiple copies and versions of Skyrim since its release.

Some quipped that it is “W/S per second - as in Wookies Per Second” pertaining to the dashboard's W and S key indicators, which are meant for keybinds when accelerating or decelerating. There are plenty of other witty jokes about Starfield’s unit of speed on the thread, but the most logical explanation for the unit of speed would be “meters per second,” as a fellow Starfield fan shared. Many others continued to talk about how slow ships would be if they were measured by meters per second.
However, aside from being the easiest understood measurement, having the speed measured by meters per second makes sense in a dogfighting or spacefighting scenario. While nothing is clear on how Starfield measures speed in space travel, the game’s mechanic does not necessarily focus on traveling distances but on space fights.
Starfield’s community's questioning of the game’s unit of speed may result from prolonged weeks without updates and the rather lengthy wait for the Shattered Space DLC.
