The last couple of weeks have been full of surprises for Starfield and Bethesda Game Studios. After it could not win any awards at The Games Awards last month, it had a surprise win for Best Innovative Gameplay at the 2023 Steam Awards.
It also had a couple of nominations at the BAFTA and the New York Game Awards. When you think the nominations are over, we receive news that Starfield is nominated yet again for the Best Technology category at the GDC’s 2024 Game Developers Choice Awards!
As expected, it’s up against giants once again. Its competitors are Alan Wake II, Baldur’s Gate 3, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Another strong contender in other awards bodies, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, received only an Honorable Mention for this category.
There will be no votation round for this nomination, however. Instead, game developers will be the ones deciding on the ultimate winner during the Game Developers Conference on March 20, 2024. You can purchase a pass to attend the awards ceremony physically.
However, if you cannot make it, you can visit the GDC’s Twitch channel and the Independent Games Festival Awards Twitch channel.
Several fans have been severely disappointed at what they considered a snub for “Game of the Year” during TGA 2023. One even called for a boycott of the event’s livestream and questioned some players who think that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is superior to Starfield.
In any case, Starfield managed to bag the Xbox Game of the Year award during the Golden Joystick Awards.
