It’s a good idea to know what the Starfield level cap is before diving into the game. RPGs are known for their diversity, and most of them don’t allow you to have all traits/skills equipped at the same time. So, if there is a level cap in Starfield, then it means that you won’t be able to create an ultimate character that can do everything.
You will have to choose which skills to level up, and if there is a cap, then wrong choices could end up ruining your build. Let's make sure nothing like this happens to you and take a look at the Starfield level cap!
What Is a Level Cap?
This section is designed to help new RPG players who don’t know what a level cap is, how it works, and why it is featured in many games. So, let's look at level caps and their main purpose.
The level cap is the max level you can achieve in the game. Once your character reaches this limit, they cannot gain more levels and become stronger. Such a feature makes the game stricter and requires the player to be careful to avoid wasting their skill points on useless skills.
So, if the game has a strict level cap, then it means that you will have to spend more time planning your build, as you may not get some important skills if you waste your skill points on other abilities. If it doesn't then you won't need to worry about your build at all as you will eventually be able to learn all the skills.
This is why the presence of a level cap is so important for many players and today we will tell you if Starfield has such a feature or not. This information will help you choose your approach to this game and determine the time you need to spend before you play. Of course, you can dive into the game without learning its skill system, but if there is a level cap, then you will be unable to get all the abilities!
Is There a Level Cap in Starfield?
Pete Hines commented during his Q&A during gamescom that he didn't know if there was a level cap. Whether he was being purposefully vague, or actually did not know, remains to be seen. We do know that one Starfield achievement is to reach level 100, so we know you can at least raise your level that high.
Judging by the previous games from Bethesda, it wouldn't be unusual if the game didn’t have a level cap at all. Starfield will have a huge galaxy with multiple planets full of things to do, just like in Skyrim. So, as we said, it wouldn't be weird for Starfield not to have a level cap.
How High Could the Level Cap in Starfield Be?
Well, it's hard to predict such facts about the game when we can't play it. However, during different gameplay showcases, we could see some level 50 and 80 enemies. So, it is likely that if there are enemies of such levels, then our level cap will be no lower than level 80. However, the max level of your enemies may mean nothing, and the player's level may be limited to 100 or even more.
The second way to determine what the level cap will be is simply to look at all the skills and calculate how many levels you'll need to max them out. There's interesting research made by one of the fans that we recommend you check out.
According to this research, there are 328 ability ranks and you'll need 326 levels to earn enough skill points to max them out. So, if we assume that there is no strict level cap, then most likely it will be the max level we can attain.
What Do Bethesda Fans Think About the Level Cap in Starfield?
Opinions about the level cap in Starfield are very different. For example, some people dislike the leveling system in most Bethesda games as it makes you feel that you have no progress in the game. Yes, such a problem is present in the many RPGs from Bethesda. This can be especially annoying in Oblivion. Your enemies simply match the level of your character, so there’s no need to level up and become stronger.
However, there are also players who enjoy the systems from Fallout 4 and Skyrim where you have no limits on skills you can learn. This makes the game more relaxing as the player doesn't have to worry about their skill point economy.
So, people share different opinions about the leveling system of Starfield. However, judging by the previous games from this developer, we could have unlimited skill points and our character will eventually be able to become an ultimate badass. After all, being an infinite RPG is one of the key features of the latest titles from Bethesda.
Starfield Mods Could Fix a Level Cap
Those who worry about such things probably don’t know about the modding community of Bethesda games. There are many different modifications that completely rework the combat system, leveling, magic, and other features in games like Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 4, etc. So, even if you don’t get the opportunity to max out all your skills, there will most likely be a mod that will allow you to do so.
So, we expect that there will be no strict level caps in Starfield, and you'll be able to max out most of the skills. At the very least you should have the option to respec your character. The truth will be revealed after the release of the game, and we look forward to more information about its mechanics and features!
