2024 is a busy year for the Elder Scrolls franchise. Not only is Elder Scrolls Online celebrating its first decade of existence next weekend, but The Elder Scrolls franchise is celebrating its 30th anniversary today!
The series began with The Elder Scrolls: Arena, released on March 24, 1994. It had been a relatively eventful release, with Bethesda missing its initial release date during the Christmas holidays in 1993.
The distributor limited the release of the MS-DOS game to only 20,000 units because its cover image featured a scantily clad female warrior.
That, however, was the first step in a journey that led to more successful titles in what became a franchise. The fifth entry, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, became so successful that modders continued to create game-enhancing features to the base game 13 years after it was released.
Of course, there will be more! In a statement published on the official Bethesda Games Studios account, the company outlined the future projects under the franchise. These include the Elder Scrolls: Castles, which is currently in soft launch in several countries and is expected to launch next year.
The statement also confirmed the ongoing development of the much-awaited Elder Scrolls VI, which was revealed with Starfield in 2018. BGS said the development staff has already started playing early builds, an experience that filled them “with the same joy, excitement, and promise of adventure.”
Finally, the note ended with a message of thanks to the community that sustained the Elder Scrolls games over the years. Bethesda said it looks forward to celebrating each of the next 30 years with everyone.
The Elder Scrolls Online 10th anniversary celebrations kick off next weekend with a two-day event in The Netherlands. Several events around the world will follow this throughout the year until June 2025.
