It’s a sad day for the gaming and YouTuber community as one of its legendary members, Mitten Squad, passed away on December 14, 2023. The YouTuber, whose real name was Joseph Wilson, had entertained fans for many years with his “out of this world” challenges when playing Fallout 3, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout New Vegas, among others.

News of his death broke when players spotted an obituary to his memory on the website for Michigan’s Molnar Funeral Homes. The tribute wall is notably filled with kind words from all those whom he entertained with his YouTube content.

Wilson had captured the hearts of gamers worldwide with his incredible videogame challenges.

At one point, he was seen on video as completing Fallout 3 without ever talking to any NPCs he encountered. He was also known for completing the main story of Fallout 4 without getting hit by creatures or enemies.

All of these were published under the “Can You Beat” series of videos on his YouTube channel, which remains active today and has over 1 million subscribers.

Wilson had stopped streaming on July 14, 2022, to deal with his alcoholism. Although he stopped uploading videos, Mitten Squad continued giving updates on X regarding his life and health, including a post in May that revealed his pancreatitis due to his drinking.

He said in his final social media message on November 24 that he was seeing progress with his situation, with his blackouts reduced only to about 2-3 times between September to November.

He said he had been drinking during Thanksgiving, but he was toning down a little bit. He also promised to return to making videos eventually and thanked his fans for their continued support.

With his massive contribution to the Bethesda gaming community, it remains to be seen if the studio will pay tribute to him in future content in either Fallout 76 or Starfield.
