Starfield, Bethesda's latest IP from Todd Howard's studio, BGS, may resemble their other big series, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. However, 'the space game' differs from these two franchises in many ways.

All three usually sport the same ESRB M rating, but certain aspects of Starfield’s gameplay have left fans feeling like the game fails to meet the expected maturity level. Players have debated whether Starfield deserves an M rating.

While the game carries the M for mature label, certain aspects of the gameplay leave players feeling like it fails to meet the expected mature content.

Does Starfield deserve its M rating? Several players and fans think otherwise.

Originally posted on Reddit, user u/Warlock86 stated that the game’s visuals and graphic content don't feel particularly adult despite the rating.

Minor blood splashes and occasional sexual references are among the most mature elements cited. Starfield seems tame compared to Bethesda's other franchises, such as Fallout, known for its over-the-top graphic content.

They also mention the Red Mile, a place in Porrima III, where gambling and other related activities are held. There is even a gauntlet where players can participate to win prizes. Despite being a seedy backwater establishment, players can’t gamble or bet on runs here and are limited to only doing the gauntlet run. It's a tad disappointing for an M-rated title.

Many players in the thread echo the same sentiment, while others point out a few reasons why the game received an M rating. Taking stimulants and consuming alcohol may already be two of the factors resulting in this rating. Add the prevalent drug use, and the ratings may as well be an M.

Overall, the general consensus echoes a broader desire for more intense, immersive experiences in Starfield. Players hope future updates incorporate the graphic and mature content that made games like Fallout 4 and Skyrim stand out.

While Starfield has its merits and undoubtedly appeals to a broad audience, some fans feel that it doesn't quite live up to its M-rating. Players can only hope that Bethesda embraces more mature content in future DLCs to enhance the immersive and thrilling experience that many have come to expect from their games.
