With the Gold Road update on the way, fans are excited about one new Elder Scrolls Online feature that could change the meta: scribing.

Scribing is a new system in ESO that allows players to customize skills called grimoires. The update will include 11 grimoires, each with three different scripts (Focus, Signature, and Affix scripts) that can be individually customized, allowing players to have over 4,000 different skill combinations.

With such a large number of skill combinations, the Elder Scrolls Online developers shared how they will utilize these in their gameplay.

For Caleb, the game’s combat designer, the skill Elemental Explosion amped up with a Knockback focus script is perfect for a mage archetype. Even more fascinating about this skill combination is that it scales the damage dealt by adding the Warmage’s Defense Class Signature script. An additional Cowardice Affix Script lowers the enemy’s weapon and spell damage, making it perfect for PvP.

According to Cullen Lee, ESO's senior system designer, a zone-of-effect spell that damages enemies and interrupts their casting is great for Necromancers. If you love PvE, like in the wonderfully made TESV: Skyrim, you’ll be keen to add the Necromancer Class Mastery Signature script, which provides extra Magick, Stamina, and Health based on the number of nearby corpses.

Those who love to utilize damage over time will love Senior QA Tester II Caleb Noffsinger’s Scribing build: A Traveling Knives grimoire that deals Poison Damage while increasing damage dealt. Another Wayfarer’s Mastery Signature script turns their Dragonknight into a DPS-focused build. Combine this with ESO’s Gold Road pre-order mount and pet, and you’ll have a deadly mounted tank in no time.

Being able to shield throw like Captain America elevates your experience when playing a sword-and-shield class, just like what Radacal Alexander, ESO’s animator, did to their player character. Partnering this grimoire with a multi-target Focus and damage-over-time Signature makes a tanky character even more terrifying.

These are just a few unique combinations players can try once the Gold Road update releases next month. While waiting for this exciting update, please share with us what Scribing skills you are excited about in the comment below!
