The NPC companion feature in any Bethesda role-playing game tends to be a hit or miss.

More often than not, NPC companions would break stealth, attack other enemies for no reason, and become stuck in many places without any other way of pathing back toward the player.

One great thing about Starfield’s Creations Club is that it provides fantastic mods that improve gameplay features like this. Thanks to the Command NPCs mod, adventuring with your Starfield NPC companions just became much better.

Created by mod author xtcrefugee, the Command NPCs mod is roughly 22.66 KB, but it packs many new features, which are great for exploring space together.

Players will now have the option to issue orders to their NPC companions via the Command Menu, which now replaces the Talk option when highlighting NPCs. You can also command unnamed crew members, so spelunking with your favorite Ballistic Weapons Specialist is better than ever.

The mod allows players to command one specific NPC at a time. However, switching to another NPC companion is easier as it also lets players quickly release the existing companions by issuing orders at another NPC.

The Command option first identifies the NPC, and players can then issue what they want the NPC to do, whether loot enemies, stay still, interact with other objects, or trade with them by opening their inventory.

While the mod is easy to install and does not require any load order requirements, it has extensive documentation that every mod user should read.

Some NPC characters will have prompts about taking on a specific task or looting. NPCs will always put the looted items in their inventory. An uninstallation guide has also been added for those who want to switch back to vanilla companion behavior.
